Contents: basic edited 10-min time series of meteorological data and computed flux components for the summer Khromov1 survey cruise in the JES. In particular, the file contains time, air temperature, air pressure, shortwave and longwave radiation, relative humidity, sea surface temperature, ship GPS latitude and longitude, zonal and meridional wind components, wind stress magnitude, net surface heat flux, shortwave heat flux, longwave heat flux, sensible and latent heat fluxes, no-sky solar radiation, and sun altitude. Sample rate: dt = 10 min
Period: based on ship's speed, cruise times are
- start: 7/25/99 10:00:00 GMT
- end: 8/11/99 20:50:00 GMT

File: khromov2_10m.cdf (converted from .mat by S.Dickinson)
Contents: basic edited 10-min time series of meteorological data and flux components for the winter Khromov2 survey cruise period. Fluxes computed using original TC2.5 and revised coare26vn formulations. The TC2.5 values are kept for comparison, but should not be used, since TC2.5 was developed for low latitude applications. Coare26 was developed with mid- and high-latitude data and is used here. In particular, the file contains time, air temperature, air pressure, shortwave and longwave radiation, relative humidity, sea surface temperature, ship GPS latitude and longitude, zonal and meridional wind components, wind stress magnitude, net surface heat flux, shortwave heat flux, longwave heat flux, sensible and latent heat fluxes, no-sky solar radiation, and sun altitude. This file can be read with read_k2_10.c.
Processing:
- 10-min time series constructed from the khromov2 1-min data using create_khromov2_10m.m. The 1-min data first LP filtered with xf=pl66tn(x,1/60,24/60), then subsampled every 10 min. This choice of filter has half-amplitude time = 24 min.
- due to failure of ASIMET anemometer, the ship's 6-hr winds were interpolated to the 10-min values for analysis and the flux calculations.
- used compute_khromov2_hf10m.m (TC2.5) to compute the stress and heat flux components. The sensor height used was 15 m.
- used compute_khromov2_10m_fluxes.m (with revised coare26vn.m) to compute stress and heat flux components. (coare26vn.m corrects several problems that caused minor differences in the flux values computed using an earlier version of coare26.)
Sample rate: dt = 10 min
Period: based on ship's speed, cruise times are
- start: 3/02/00 12:00:00 GMT
- end: 3/16/00 12:00:00 GMT
File: khromov2_1m.cdf (converted from .mat by S.Dickinson)

File: revel3_1m.cdf (converted from .mat by S.Dickinson)
Contents: basic edited IMET, ASIMET, and Clive's SIO data collected on the JES R/V Revelle JES winter SeaSoar cruise. In particular, the file contains time, air temperature, air pressure, shortwave and longwave radiation, relative humidity, sea surface temperature, latitude, longitude, gyro heading, wind speed and wind direction. This file can be read with read_r3_1.c.
Processing: time base of the IMET data on revel3_1m redone to be on the minute (not 28 sec off). ASIMET short-wave data merged with IMET to form one continuous time series. The IMET raw wind direction (wrt bow) (see revel3a_1m) was constant much of the time, making all derived wind speed and direction data bad. Clive's 1-sec SIO wind speed and direction, air temp, pressure, and RH data was processed and used to compute true wind speed and direction time series for the bow upper and mast sensor sets. The mast wind speed and direction data is
equal to the upwind value of the mast starboard and port sensor sets, in order to minimize sheltering effects. The IMET series was truncated to the SIO wind series, so that
the resulting time series corresponds to just the SeaSoar cruise. Also added ASIMET lw as lwr
12/10/00: added IMET lw2n (lw time series from IMET sensor 2, renamed lw time series from IMET sensor 1 as lw1n. Both lw1n and lw2n are original files, only having been interpolated to exact time base (i.e., have not be smoothed with wild.m.
12/28/00: as a result of comparisons between IMET lw2n, ASIMET, and pre- and post-cruise ASIMET comparisons, decided to use ASIMET lw series as corrected by a constant bias, such that
lwr(new) = lwr(old) - 12.
Use the new version lwr in all subsequent analysis. The original (uncorrected) lwr has been renamed lwrold.
Note: precipitation data bad, so not included in revel3_1m.
Sample rate: dt = 1.000 min
Period
- start: 1/17/00 00:01:00 GMT
- end: 2/04/00 23:35:00 GMT
File: revel3_5m.cdf (converted from .mat by S.Dickinson)
Contents: 5-min edited combined IMET, ASIMET, and Clive Dorman's SDSU data collected on the R/V Revelle winter SeaSoar cruise. The air-sea fluxes computed using original TC2.5 and revised coare26vn.m bulk formulations. The TC2.5 values are kept for comparison, but should not be used, since TC2.5 was developed for low latitude applications. Coare26 was developed with mid- and high-latitude data and is used here. In particular, the file contains time, air temperature, air pressure, shortwave and longwave radiation, relative humidity, sea surface temperature, latitude, longitude, gyro heading, wind speed and wind direction, wind stress magnitude, net surface heat flux, shortwave heat flux, longwave heat flux, sensible and latent heat fluxes, no-sky solar radiation, and solar altitude. This file can be read with read_3_5.c.
Processing
- 5-min time series constructed from the revel3_1m 1-min data using make_revel3_5m.m. All 1-min data first LP filtered with xf=pl66tn(x,1/60,12/60), then subsampled every 5 min. This choice of filter has half-amplitude time = 12 min, resulting in a Nyquist freq = 1/(10 min)
- the TC2.5 heat flux variables computed using compute_revel3_hf5m.m, with mast true wind speed applied at IMET sensor height 15 m. This choice based on comparison of the SDSU relative wind speeds with the IMET raw wind speed.
- for sensor comparison, the original longwave series from IMET sensors 1 and 2 and the ASIMET sensor are included. The original ASIMET longwave series is named lwrold and the corrected series is named lwr. lwr should be used in all computations.
- used compute_revelle3_5m_fluxes.m (with revised coare26vn.m) to compute stress and heat flux components. (coare26vn.m corrects several problems that caused minor differences in the flux values computed using an earlier version of coare26.)
